Here’s what you need to know before you land.

1. You NEED a Rental Car in Curaçao

This is one of the biggest things visitors underestimate. While it is possible to explore Curaçao without a rental car, you won't get the full island experience. Having your own vehicle gives you the freedom to discover hidden beaches, scenic viewpoints, and local gems at your own pace.

Unlike some Caribbean islands where you can walk everywhere or rely on resorts, Curaçao is spread out. The best beaches, restaurants, hiking spots, and activities are located all over the island.

Public transportation is limited, and taxis can get expensive very quickly.

If you really want to experience Curaçao properly, renting a car is essential.

Having your own car lets you:

• Beach hop freely

• Explore hidden local spots

• Visit the west side of the island

• Save money on transportation

• Travel on your own schedule

Local tip: Book your rental car early - especially during holidays and peak season. The best and most affordable cars sell out fast.

2. Book Activities BEFORE You Arrive

A lot of travelers assume they can book everything once they land - but popular activities in Curaçao often fill up days in advance.

This is especially true for:

3. Don’t Forget Your Digital Immigration Card

Many visitors don’t realize Curaçao requires travelers to complete a digital immigration card before arrival.

This is mandatory for entry and needs to be completed online within 7 days before your flight.

You’ll also want to have:

• A valid passport

• Return or onward ticket

• Accommodation information

• Travel details handy

Local tip: The Digital Immigration Card is FREE - if you are on a website that is asking for payment, you’re on the wrong website. This is the correct website.  

4. Curaçao Is More Than Just Willemstad & Mambo Beach

Most first-time visitors stay around Willemstad - which is beautiful - but the real magic of the island is exploring beyond the city.

Some of the best beaches and experiences are on the west side of the island, including:

• Playa Kenepa Grandi

• Cas Abao Beach

• Shete Boka National Park

• Christoffel National Park

This is another reason why having a rental car is so important.

5. The Sun Here Is STRONG

Even travelers from warm climates get surprised by the Caribbean sun.

You’ll want to pack:

• Reef-safe sunscreen

• Sunglasses

• Hats

• Lightweight clothing

• Water shoes

And most importantly - stay hydrated.

The combination of heat, sun, salt water, and outdoor activities catches up to people fast.

6. Use Google Maps

Good news: navigating Curaçao is actually pretty easy on Google Maps. Apple Maps, Waze, and other navigation apps don’t work on the island.

Most roads and beaches appear accurately on Google Maps, making it simple to explore the island on your own.

That said:

• Download offline maps before arrival

• Some beach roads can get rough

• A few hidden spots may not have clear signs

Locals are friendly though, so don’t be afraid to ask for directions.

7. Curaçao Uses Multiple Currencies

The local currency is the Caribbean Guilder, but US dollars are accepted almost everywhere.

Most restaurants, beach clubs, and activity companies accept:

• Credit cards

• Debit cards

• US cash (small denominations)

Still, it’s smart to carry some cash/coins for:

• Beach entrance fees

• Small local snack bars

• Tips

• Parking

8. Sundays Are Quieter

Many local businesses close earlier on Sundays, and some restaurants or shops may not open at all.

It’s a great beach day, but we recommend:

• Grocery shopping beforehand

• Planning activities in advance

• Making restaurant reservations if needed

9. Curaçao Is Safe - But Use Common Sense

Overall, Curaçao is considered one of the safer Caribbean islands for tourists.

Still, just like anywhere:

• Don’t leave valuables in your car

• Avoid isolated areas late at night

• Lock your rental vehicle

• Keep an eye on belongings at beaches

Most visitors have an amazing, trouble-free trip.

10. You’ll Want More Time Than You Think

People often book 3-4 days and realize quickly it’s not enough.

There’s so much to do here:
